Organized in Orissa

Today was exciting as we mixed a bit of pleasure with the business for which we came. In the morning team members took a few hours for sightseeing at several temple sites in Bhubaneswar. This city boasts more temples per capita than any other city in India. Many of these ancient structures date back hundreds of years. Both the detail and scale are most spectacular.

In the afternoon we held a group meeting and in the evening we conducted individual team meetings & repacked medical bags. In the group meeting we heard an exciting report from Dr. Satyananda Patra (the General Secretary of the Orissa Baptist Association) on the progress of the evangelistic work in Orissa since our medical mission had concluded in 2007.

Dr. Patra again this year gave us a terrific report on the way God used our team in the western region of Orissa in the villages of a Hundi Religious leader, the "Sadhu". Until 2006 this area was not accessible to local Christian workers. God has moved mightily even since last year and has opened more doors for three church planters who are now permanently based in this region. Dr. Patra reported that 46 prayer groups (each with around 8-10 families) exist directly as a result of this work. Wow, what a significant answer to prayer!

We ask that you please be in prayer for the pastor training conference that will begin tomorrow morning. If there is any part of our ministry effort that is vulnerable to local fundamentalists it is this facet of the mission. At the last minute we have shifted the location of this conference which will be conducted at the same time we conduct our medical clinics. Pray for 35 area pastors and 18 seminary students who will take part. Dr. Everett Berry, our Joy India team pastor, will lead these daily sessions.

Tomorrow our medical mission begins at the YMCA here in Bhubaneswar...
