Around the corner but in different worlds

Today our commute was literally 10 minutes. We took the usually time carefully loading the vans and strapping the pharmacy/nurses bags on top. We proceeded to leave the grounds of the Hilton hotel drive past a second very posh hotel after which we made a right turn just past a very nice shopping center roundabout. After driving another city block we drove off of the paved road and entered the largest slum in Bhubaneswar.

This area called Saliasahi is reported to have a population of over 50,000 people in a very small tightly packed quarter. We entered this slum area and proceeded to a neighborhood called “Janthanagar” where we found the Grace Children Home and Care & Share Mission church imbedded in the midst of this destitute suburb.

Incredible that we drove such a short distance yet witnessed such an enormous disparity even within a city and state which already have such great need by our standards. The orphanage was home to 40 sweet and very well-behaved children. We placed them first in the queue before seeing the throng of villagers who came in a steady flow throughout the day. Our four teams saw a total of 787 patients today.

Please be in prayer for our team tomorrow as we will travel nearly two hours in each direction (65 kms) to the fishing villages of Puri. This is a difficult journey along a very well traveled two-lane roadway.
